The island of Cyprus is one that has become sought after by many visitors, tourists, and new residence of the island. This is one island that has taken its location and used it to their advantage and the government of the island also knows this fact and has taken steps in making new residents and visitors to the island feel at home.

There are many ways they have done this and there are statistics to prove what they have done and the effects of their plan. There are published statistics that have been released showing Cyprus is a growing island, one of these is from the years 1977 to the year 2003 and it shows that the economy increased one hundred and twelve percent. A large amount of these employees are employed in the service sector in Cyprus, while this may not come as a shock when reading these statistics is that the government recognized this and retrained the service industry employees to boost their tourism numbers to accommodate the amount of tourists that visit the island. There are also statistics that show Cyprus places 16th world wide in terms of per capita income, with a five-year growth rate of approximately 3.8%.
Over the past twenty years the industry of Cyprus has changed from agriculture to light manufacturing and services, which includes some of the items they now export. The service sector that included tourism that has reached almost seventy percent on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.
Cyprus is located south of Turkey, north of Egypt east-southeast of Greece and is the largest of the Mediterranean islands. It has a long history having been the mid point for Europe, Asia an Africa, one that has also been reason for many changes over the thousands of years in rulers on the island.
For this reason there is so much history on the island some of which remains untouched and is under excavation to unearth these treasures from the past.
The island is officially known as the Republic of Cyprus, it was under British rule until 1960 when it gained its Independence and became a Commonwealth and in the year 2004 the Republic of Cyprus became a member of the European Union. Cyprus is the only member of the European Union to have a communist government and one of only one of two countries that have elected democratically to choose this type of rule. As a member of the European Union and one that sees approximately two and a half million tourists a year they adopted the use of Euros as the countries money as of the 1st of January 2008.
The weather on this Mediterranean island is temperate with an estimated 325 days of sunshine and while it does have a rainy season, the total days of sunshine more than make up for the rainy season. It also has warm to hot temperatures that are a pleasant and dry until the cooler temperatures and the rains of the short winter months. Which tends to be perfect living and perfect for tourists.
